Inside Sukhothai Historical Site Moat Walls

Wat Traphang Ngon
  • The visitor can rest at this cool, picturesque wat situated on an island in the center of a “silver lake” (Traphang Ngon) filled with lotus blossoms. The chedi is a squat lotus-bud tower, 10 meters square. In the center there is a vihara with a large seated Buddha and standing Buddhas can be seen in niches on the spire facing the four directions. This monastery was probably constructed at the same time as Wat Mahathat.
Wat Si Sawai
  • There is evidence that this was once a Hindu shrine dedicated to Shiva, which was turned into a temple possibly between the 12th to 13th centuries, as bronze Buddha images of the Lopburi era were found here.
  • There are three chedi, and the middle chedi is connected to the vihara. Two walls surround the chedi, the inside of brick with veneer of slate, and the outside wall is a square wall of laterite.
Wat Traphang Thong
  • Although there is only a small chedi of Singhalese type in the center of the “golden pond” here, this wat is a living monastery, and homage is paid annually by the monks to a historically significant footprint of Buddha which is to be seen in the mondop beside this chedi. This footprint is believed to be the one which King Lu Thai founded in 1359.
Wat Sorasak
  • This small monastery positioned in the north sector of the city has a chedi of Singhalese style, with  supporting elephants around its base. The sandstone vihara differs from the laterite composition of other monuments
