• Thailand has in excess of 148 wildlife sanctuaries and National Parks and Marine National Parks. These 148 National Parks are detailed individually and within each regional classification of Thailand, being South Thailand National Parks, East Thailand National Parks, North Thailand National Parks (59), Central Thailand National Parks and Northeast Thailand (I'san) National Parks and Marine National Parks.
• Thailand is home to over 15,000 species of vascular plants and 16,000 species of animals (of which 960 are birds, 310 are reptiles, 107 are amphibians and 285 are mammals). There are in excess of 70,000 species of insects and 1,200 species of butterflies.
• This biological diversity stems from Thailand's location. Thailand lies between the Tropic of Cancer and the Equator (from 5.30 to 20.30 latitude North and from 97.2 to 105.3 longitude east).
• The total area of Thailand is more than 513,000 square kilometres (198,110 square miles) and is divided into four main geographic regions. Accordingly the Thailand National Parks vary depending upon the climatic conditions affecting diversity. In this web site we intend to detail all 148 National Parks. In doing so we will specify what geographical regions, vegetation types, major ecosystems and common plant species and animal species can be found in each National Park. General characteristics and classifications of these will be described in separate detail and linked to each National Park web page or pages where relevant.
  

Southern & Central Thailand National Marine Parks

• The Southern Thailand Peninsula region is tropical, limestone based karst country with tropical wet evergreen forests and coastal scenery with coral reefs and fine beaches, Northern Thailand is characterised by temperate climate forests and North Eastern Thailand by sandstone soils with seasonally dry deciduous forests and savannah grasslands.
• The South Thailand National and Marine Parks include, Phi Phi Marine National Park Tarutao Marine National Park Ao Phang Nga Marine National Park and Surin Marine National Park. The Southern coastal scenery is divided into two separate Seas, the Andaman Sea on the West coast of The Ishmus of Kra and the Gulf of Thailand to the East thereof. The total Coast line exceeds 2,600 kilometers (1,620 miles).
• The Northeast Thailand National Parks include Khao YaiPhu KradungPhu Wiang and Phu Rua
• The Central Thailand National Parks in include Ko ChangKhao Sam Roi and Kaeng Krachan National Parks.
• North Thailand National Parks includes Doi Inthanon National Park Mae Ping National Park Nam Nao National Park and Doi Suthep National Park. These are all deciduous or rainforest mountain parks.

The differences Between, National Parks, National Forest, World Heritage Nature reserves, Historical Parks, etc

• National Parks and National Marine Parks are selected and managed by The Thailand National Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation

• Forest Parks in Thailand are parklands set aside for conservation which are governed and owned by Provincial Governments.

• Ramsar Wetlands in Thailand are wetlands selected by as being of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention 1975. The WWF considers wetlands as a most threatened ecosystm world wide because of salinization, invasive species, loss of vegetation, excessive development and inundation (an overflow or accumulation of an expanse of water that submerges land).

• There are two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Thailand concerned with nature conservation and National Parks. These are, (1) Dong Phayayen Khao Yai Forest Complex and (2) The Thungyai Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuaries

• Asean and other Asia based organisations have also recognized some areas in Thailand for conservation and protection and these include; (1) The Western Forest Complex.
