There are 7 periods and art themes over most of Thailand during the
past 2000 years. In addition there have been regional themes at
different periods in some, in some and not all, of the regions that
today make the Thailand Nation.
The common national themes or influences are, [ 1 ] prehistoric art, [
2 ] Indianisation art, either imported or made locally but influenced
by Indian themes, [ 3 ] Mon art, [ 4 ] Khmer art from both the pre
Angkor and Angkor Empire periods, [ the themes and subject matter of
which extended beyond the political Empire ], [ 5 ] Sukhothai, [ 6 ]
Ayuthaya, and [ 7 ] Bangkok [ Rattanakosin ].
The non National regional themes in the North region are those of the
Burmese Mon, the Shan, the Tai Lu, the Tai Yuan and the minority ethnic
highlanders and lowlanders.
In South Thailand it is those of the Srivajaya Empire, the Malay and Chinese.
In Central Thailand it is those of Lop Buri, U Thong and Khmer
architecture and in I 'san it is those of the Tai-Lao and Khmer
architecture.
The art and architecture forms follow the ethnic and political patterns
and these are demonstrated in the Empires maps of South East Asia over
the last 1,500 years.
