| Wat Phra Phai Luang Sukhothai |
|
- Wat Phra Phai Luang pre-dates the founding of Sukhothai and was originally a Khmer Mahayana Buddhist temple built somewhere between 1181 and 1219. This is confirmed by the three Khmer styled Prangs.
- Later when the Tais arrived and created Sukhothai it was converted to a Theravada Buddhist temple.
- Wat Phra Phau Luang is very important for its collection of art stuccos. Whilst the temple is rich with decorative works of art, most of the stuccos have been removed for security to the Ramkhamhaeng Museum Sukhothai which has a stucco exhibition in the new stucco museum near the garden area.
- Wat Phra Phai Luang is located near the northern gate. It is surrounded by a moat 600 meters long on each side and which is supplied with water by Lam Pan River. Access is either by car from the west side or by walking over the bridge across the rear moat on the east side.
- Wat Phra Phai Luang is the largest temple in the north region of Skhothai and accordingly there is much to see. Tour guides tend to push tourists to one site after another and vehicle drivers have no idea of the many details to see at Sukhothai sites. We recommend recommend you spend time looking for these 8 major sites of interest listed below at Wat Phra Phai Luang.
