This “ Monastery of the great stupa ” was constructed at the end of the
14th century when the chedi or stupa was 24 metres high. King Tilokarat
further extended it in 1481 to a height of 82 metres.
- It was damaged in
an earthquake in 1545 removing 30 metres from the top of this
impressive construction. Even after that, it was the tallest structure
in Chiang Mai for 500 years.
- Wat Chedi Luang Chiang Mai housed the Emerald Buddha from 1468
until the earthquake when the Laotion King then ruling Lan Na took it
to Luang Prabang in what is today Laos. A copy called the Phra Yok or
Jade Buddha was placed in the eastern niche of the Chedi.
- The main Viharn built in 1928 contains a large standing 14th century Buddha,
the Phra Chao Attarot.
- This is the most important temple in
Chiang Mai as it houses the city
pillar, known as the Sao Inthakin, held in much veneration by the
people of Chiang Mai who believe it is the home of guardian spirits of
the city. During the festival of Inthakin offerings are made for
prosperity.
