Phuket Island Thailand

  • Phuket Island Thailand is a small peninsula but separated by a small bridged band of water to technically be called an island [ '' Ko '' or '' Koh '' is the Thai word for '' Island '' ].
  • Phuket is the largest of the Thailand Islands and has many of Thailand's fine beaches.
  • Phuket Island has an international airport and hundreds of hotels to be an arrival centre for a much greater region so that visitors should plan excursions out and away to Ko Phi Phi, Ao Phang Nga, Krabi, Surin Marine National Park and the other major tourist places of interest. For first time visitors to the region Phuket is a good base for accommodation.
  • Phuket is 550 square kilometers and rises to a height of 532 meters. It is located on the West Coast of The Isthmus of Kra of South Thailand in the Andaman Sea.

The major tourist attractions are:
  • The natural landscape including the beaches of Layan and Bang Tao, Pansea, Surin, Patong, Karon, Kata and Kata Noi and Nai Harn. This plus the daily boating tours to Phi Phi Islands, Ao Phang Nga Bay and the surrounding National Parks are what Phuket is realy all about. Time is precious when you fly so far to come to Phuket so we recommend you emphasis these tourist places and not be diverted to secondary sites promoted in web sites to justify advertising.
The secondary tourist attractions are:
  • The Taoist Temples of Put Jaw and Jui Tui
  • The Aquarium
  • The ruins of ancient Muang Thalang and Thalang National Museum
  • Khao Phra Thaeo Wildlife Sanctuary
  • Phuket Town and the Baba Heritage
  • Festivals in Phuket
  • Phuket Sporting events and regattas.
Time wasters in Phuket:
  • There are no places of cultural, artistic or historical interest, even the temples here are not worth a visit. Tourist places of interest like these are to be found elsewhere in Thailand.
  • Phuket offers the very best location for a beach holiday and eco tourism, boating and marine activities. It is the first class location for these interests.
  • Again Krabi on the other side of the Bay of Ao Phang Nga on the other side of Phi Phi Islands is similar and also worthy of a visit.

  • The topography of Phuket Island Thailand includes a mountain range on the western side of the Island which is an extension of the 450 kilometer mountain range from the mailnland.
  • The west side of Phuket Island has the better beaches for tourism with white sandy beaches, unlike the mud flats of the east side within the calm seas of Ao Phanga Bay.
  • The main west coast beaches on Phuket for tourism are, Kata Beach, Kata Noi Beach, Patong Beach and Karon Beach.
  • At the southern end also are Bang Tao Beach and Nai Ham Beach. Phuket Island is a strategic location to stay for numerous day trips to surrounding locations of Phi Phi Islands and  Ao Phang Nga.
  • Phuket Island is about 220 square miles in size and 70 per cent of its land is occupied by the mountains. The various tourist resorts are scattered mainly down the west coast and to get around one is advised to hire a vehicle for daily tours. On the west coast the coast line is divided into the northern cost, the Central districts of Patong and Kathu and the Southern Coast.
  • The Central District is very commercial and caters for the cheaper facilities, night life of bars and other lesser sophistication while the Southern and Northern sections offer more relaxed and secluded hideaways and are usually more expensive.

Phuket Weather
Phuket has two seasons, the rainy season between May to December inclusive and the hot dry season from January to April inclusive. We recommend you look at the weather links on thailandsworld.com to better understand the tidal and weather conditions when making a tour of Phuket. The effect of tides, particularly on the east coast of Phuket is important in planning when and where to go as access to and from Phuket is prevented at low tides and boating and tours on boats must schedule their programs and timing to meet the effect of changing tide levels.

Scuba Diving Phuket Thailand
All the better locations at which to stay are on the western coast line which adjoins the Andaman Sea. Here the weather is better, the beaches long and clean and the sea water pristine, all located along a spectacular coastline of mountains, bays and rocky promontories and crystalline waters. The southern portion often referred to as the Muang District is more enchanting and has numerous spectacular positions to rest. The Central District and Patong is more down market and caters for the gay scene, parlour type amusements, bars, go-karts, miniture golf, and games generally. However the Patong Beach is very good. Patong town is and urban centre. The hotels and resorts in Northern Coast region are all very good and are generally more remote for those seeking nature and relaxation with out the Patong style of attractions.
