Chocolate Hills On Bohol Island

The Island of Bohol, to the southeast of Cebu Island is a popular tourist resort area for its beaches and hinterland travel but is equally famous for several geological formations. The most famous are The Chocolate Hills.

The Chocolate Hills.
  • The Chocolate Hills and its immediate environs are relatively flat to rolling topography with elevation ranges from 100 m to 500 m above sea level.
  • These were the uplift of coral deposits and the action of rainwater and erosion. The Chocolate Hills are located throughout the towns of Carmen, Batuan and Sagbayan on the Island of Bohol and consist of 1,776 mounds of the same general shape.
  • During the dry season when precipitation is inadequate, the grass covered hills turn chocolate brown, hence the name in reference to a confection.
  • The Chocolate Hills area has been declared the country’s 3rd National Geological Monument in recognition of its scientific value and geo-morphic uniqueness. Similar to the formations found in Java, the conical and almost symmetrical and same sized hills known as ‘’Chocolate Hills ‘’ are more aesthetically extensive.
