Wat Buppharam Chiang Mai

Wat Buppharam Chiang Mai

  • The site of Wat Buppharam Chiang Mai is of historical importance, as it is from here that in 1797 Chao Kawila took back the city of Chiang Mai after 200 years of Burmese rule.
  • Although the temple was established in 1497 by King Muang Kaew most of the architecture is late 19th century.
  • The smaller Lan Na style viharn was built in 1500, but has been completely renovated. The Buddha image it houses is over 300 years old, although it too has undergone a modern renovation. The larger 200 year old viharn, has recently renovated doors.
  • A completely new structure is the Ho Monthiantham hall, completed in 1996. Although impressive in size, it bears little relation to traditional Lan Na style architecture.
