  • East Mebon is a temple [ mountain ] monument dedicated to the Hindu God, Shiva. It was constructed under the supervision of King Rajendravarman who dedicated it to his parents.
  • East Mebon is constructed on the the same axis as the central Gopura of the Royal Palace, Phimeanakas behind that Gopura and the Victory Gate. It is 6,800 meters from Phimeanakas to the west inside Angkor Thom which was also constructed by King  Rajendravarman. It is also on the north south axis with Pre Rup, King Rajendravarman's temple about 1,200 meters south.
  • It was constructed on an island [ 114 meters by 117 meters ] in the center of the East Baray and officially dedicated in 953.. It has 4 landing platforms which were then used for boats to bring visitors.
  • East Mebon is constructed with four terraces, four gates, a central shrine with four surrounding shrines all located on the fourth terrace, numerous towers on the third terrace and all shrines and towers having remarkable lintels on actual or false doorways. A sample lintel is illustrated in the image below.

  • The carvings and statues at East Mebon are worthy of the visit. On each of the four corners of the first and second tiers are freestanding images of elephants made od laterite and stucco.
  • The carvings on the lintels also above each door, include, Shiva on his mount, Indra on the three headed elephant, Airavata and Nandi, the Hindu sacred Bull.The construction materials include laterite for the bases, brick and sandstone with stucco.
  • The brick constructions are for the four small towers on the top platform. The image of the lintel [ below ] is taken from one of the brick towers.
