East Baray at Angkor

  • The East Baray was built under the reign of Yasovarman. It is 1.8 kilometers wide and 7.1 kilometers long. It was built for the first city of Angkor. It was 2.5 meters deep and its water was sourced by diverting water from the Siem Reap River.
  • East Baray was built about 900 during the Kingdom of Yasovarman. It was constructed to hold 50 million cubic meters of water. Today it is dry and has been so for hundreds of years. Inside the Baray on the ground farmers today use the space to grow crops.
  • The East Baray is 12,780,000 square meters. Its walls were made from soil removed from within it. The walls are 17.8 kilometers long, 10 meters high, 20 meters wide at the top and 120 meters wide at the base. To construct with each one worker moving 2 square meters of soil a day it would have taken 6,000 workers 6 years to complete. The walls conatin about 8 million cubic meters of soil.
  • We understand some of the history about its construction from inscriptions on stones which have been found in the corners of the Baray.
  • In 952 KIng Rudravarman constructed the East Mebon in the middle of this artificial lake. Then access to it would have been by boat. Today one can drive there.
  • The East Baray is to the left side of Angkor Thom. On the west side of Angkor Thom is The West Baray, both of which are as indicated on the map.
