Further west from the west Gate of Angkor Thom there is not much to see except for The Western Baray and in its center West Mebon and to the south east corner of West Baray is the ruins of the 7 th century monument, Ak Yum.Tourists might treat this part of Angkor as a low priority place to tour in.
The West Baray at Angkor is the man made reservoir west of
Angkor Thom. The East Baray is on the east side of Angkor Thom, Angkor.
It is a large rectangular shape oriented in a west to east direction
and measures 8 kilometers by 2.2 Kilometers.
Just the same as
the East Baray, here also in the center of the lake on an ''island'' is
another Hindu temple built to worship Shiva. It is called the West
Mebon.
The West Baray was constructed during the 11th century.
When constructed it covered over earlier settlement foundations of
prior Khmer constructions. A stele with inscription confirms
settlements here from 713.
